When Everything Falls Apart

Things will happen that cause major problems in our lives and businesses. Cash flow issues, performance issues, customer complaints, key employees quitting, locations underperforming or closing, and more.

These situations can overwhelm us, sending us into a spiral of out-of-control anxiety. There’s a better way, though.

Focus on what is within your control.

The ancient Stoic philosophers were some of the smartest people to ever live. Their wisdom centers on this once-simple concept. When life overwhelms us, we should pause, assess what we can control about the situation, and work on that.

This works for traffic jams to the loss of your COO. This works on “kid forgot her lunch” to a third consecutive unprofitable quarter. It works on everything. Because the only thing we can ever do, in any situation, is act on the things within our control.

Instead of worrying, instead of complaining, instead of snapping at others, instead of giving up and quitting, identify what you can do something about and do it.
