Sacrifice

Is just reading the word painful?

It makes us wince a little bit to think about having to give something up, make a trade-off, or not get something we desire.

There’s nothing good in life that is earned without sacrifice, though.

Everything from losing those last couple pounds, to being a great parent, to building an enduring great company, to saving enough to retire early, to taking care of our health so we live a long healthy life requires sacrifice.

But isn’t embracing that part of the journey? Isn’t finding the “suck” that you actually like and can tolerate part of what makes the success so glorious? Isn’t the struggle the thing that makes the result so great?

If we want to do great things, we’re going to be called on to sacrifice. We’re not only going to sacrifice vices and distractions, but we’ll have to sacrifice good things. You see, good is often the enemy of great, and there are many times when saying “no” to something really good is the best course of action to achieve something great.

Life is a lot of trade-offs and sacrifices. The solution is to embrace the journey. Ensure the view is going to be worth the climb. Then say “no” ruthlessly to the distractions that prevent you from getting there.

The great irony is that when we embrace the reality of sacrifice, we begin to see the good in it.
