Making Waves

The only people not making waves of some kind are those sitting on the shore, not in the game.

If you want to do anything meaningful in life, you’re going to risk disrupting some status quo that someone cares about. Maybe a LOT of someones care about it! But good work done with good intentions aimed at good results almost always wins.

Those successes advance our world and have throughout history. Think about the many ways this is true:

  • To get stronger, we have to tear, stretch, and fatigue our muscles
  • To run faster, we have to run even faster than our goal so the goal pace feels easier and more sustainable
  • To increase net income, we have to generate an even larger amount of gross revenue to sufficiently cover increased overhead and higher tax percentages
  • To produce more products or provide service to a larger number of clients, we have to increase the number of employees

The list goes on and on. Species adapt or become extinct. Investments grow or go away. Businesses meet customer demand or go out of business.

All good things in life, at least, in my experience, those worth anything, are earned through struggle. That struggle results in making waves. And making waves disrupts the things that some people care about.

Be kind, be graceful, and try to work together toward mutually beneficial solutions, but don’t expect guaranteed changes if you’re only willing to sit on the shoreline and not make waves.
