Enough, Revisited

Merriam-Webster defines “enough” as “occurring in such quantity, quality, or scope as to fully meet demands, needs, or expectations”.1

A few years ago, I wrote a post asking, “What is your definition?”

Popular things we all see and hear as what will finally be enough: nicer car, better house, bigger retirement account, more and longer vacations, more money, more time, weighing less, newer gadgets, and so on. So much of this is about keeping up with, or even outdoing the Joneses?

But what if all those options were gone? How would you define “enough” then?

If you don’t know what you really want and need, you’ll likely never have enough. If you do, you probably already do.

Every day I work and interact with people to clarify their Vision and Goals. The old Cheshire Cat quote is always on my mind, “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will do.” If the desired outcome is not clear, how do you know when you’ve achieved it?

The same is true for our definition of “enough”. If we’ve never defined what it really means to us, we’ll never know if/when we’ve achieved it. And then we’re just stuck in the hamster wheel endlessly trying to achieve…well, we don’t even know what!

Most of us already have more than enough. So much so that we’re distracted from it.

Maybe I’ll start making this an annual revised post…I think it’s that important!

Do you have enough? Do you know?
