Recognizing Good Work

One of the leader’s most important responsibilities is recognizing team members for good work.

Many people have different opinions about when and how to do this ranging from recognizing every single good action to saving recognition for those few exceptional circumstances. My personal leaning is toward the latter while expressing gratitude in other ways on the regular.

The more important question, which I’m often asked by clients, is how do I keep track of who to recognize and when? Here is a simple approach from a successful CEO of two major American corporations.

This CEO explained in an interview that he added a recurring reminder to his calendar each Wednesday and Friday (choose the days that work best for you) to scan his list of direct reports for reminders of any exceptional work worthy of recognition. He then made a point that day to find each of those people and acknowledge and thank them for their good work.

A simple approach: twice a week scan your team and acknowledge work done well. Remember, a little goes a long way when it comes to recognition.
