We Never Arrive

Every person I’ve ever known in a leadership or ownership position is craving some form of getting everything “just so”. Once they do, they’ll finally be able to “relax”, “let go a little”, and “enjoy their successes”.

I’m sorry to tell you that this “arrival point” is a mirage!

We never arrive.

If we are wired for growth, continuous improvement, pushing the envelope of what we can accomplish, and, yes, that “s” word…success, we’re never finished.

There is always another dollar to make, another goal to pursue, another customer to attract and serve, another Board to sit on, and so many other things that will become interesting and attractive.

As I’m getting older, I’m learning to embrace and enjoy the journey more. They say the climb is what makes the view, and I increasingly think this is true.

I don’t know where the next opportunity will come from, but I know one will come. I don’t know where a new relationship, or the reviving of an existing one, may lead, but when I embrace those relationships to sincerely get closer to another person (who is also just trying to figure it all out), amazing things can happen.

When we fixate on an arrival point, or an “if/when I get ‘there’” point, we’re setting ourselves up for frustration and disappointment. When we focus on the work, the process, loving what we do and who we do it with, and the journey itself, with all its interesting and unexpected twists and turns, the view is much more worth the climb.

When you feel like you’re almost there…enjoy that feeling and enjoy the accomplishment when you get there. But remember it’s only one stop along the way to never truly “arriving”.
