Time Heals

I’m all about solutions. Find a problem? Solve it. Have a cool solution? Find a problem it solves and apply it.

But there are some things in life where the only solution is time.

Time does have a tendency to heal all. When we rush through trying to find or apply a solution, we lose the value of time. When we make a rash or quick decision, we lose the value of time. When we move forward with a strategy or plan, we lose the value of time. When we go all-in on a new idea without testing it for validity first, we lose the value of time.

Patience is a very hard thing for most of us in today’s society. We can’t sit quietly by ourselves without pulling out a device. We can’t go for a run without music or a podcast. We don’t save and invest enough because compounding happens too slowly or because we can’t imagine the needs of our future selves accurately.

So much of our success in life boils down to patience and consistency. Reversing those: consistently doing the dumb, boring, obvious things that we know will move us forward slowly but surely, and then patiently waiting for the results to break through.

If you’re stressed or feel caught in the busy trap today, do the counterintuitive thing: slow down. Take a break. Put some distance between you and the issues.

Time heals. Time solves. Give things some time.
