Sometimes you have to have the courage to say “no”.
Yes, often we have to say “no” to enforce boundaries, protect our time and energy, and just preserve the legal and ethical requirements in a situation.
I’m talking here, though, about the times we need to say “no” to good things.
Many opportunities come with sacrifices of the very things the opportunities are meant to afford us: time, freedom, or availability to our families and friends. Good money often comes with strings attached through the expectation that you comply with directives from the paying party. Many enjoyable and desirable relationships come with an unhealthy expectation of codependency and never-ending availability.
Life often features trade-offs and compromises. Always be willing to do so when mutual benefit results.
But when good things come with questionable motives and attachments, have the courage to say “no”. Have the strength of will to walk away and preserve your integrity, independence, and sanity.
Never be afraid to say “no”, even to a good thing, and even when others don’t understand.
