Success to Significance

Success is only valuable if it’s then translated into a significant positive impact on others.

The late Bob Buford wrote extensively about this idea in his landmark book “Half Time”, which helps those who are successful begin to think about how to have a useful second half of their lives.

I have the pleasure of meeting a lot of very successful people. Many of them are trying to determine where and how best to use their gifts, skills, and resources to make a difference for others around them. The process is more complicated than it may seem, but, at its core, it’s still about breaking it down to desired outcomes and the actions that move them forward.

If you, too, are thinking about how to take successful outcomes to the next level of service to others, a few things you might consider are:

  • What is or has been my overarching mission or goal in life?
  • What does a less self-focused version of the mission look like in terms of the outcomes it would achieve?
  • Who does this other-focused vision help and how?
  • What actions are necessary to begin to explore or implement that “greater good” version of the mission?
  • What infrastructure, partners, and resources are needed to begin the implementation?
  • What is the first step I should take right now to move this forward?

Of course, those questions are simplified and a bit one-size-fits-all, but they’re a good start.

And if you’re not on a journey to the next phase of life, they’re still valuable things to consider, ensuring the current phase stays on a path to success and adds value for those around you.
