Some estimates indicate we have over 50,000 thoughts and internal decisions to face each day.
That’s a staggering number of things flying at us and bouncing around inside our heads. No wonder many of our decisions are suboptimal!
When we’re forced to make quick decisions, we don’t always make great decisions, no matter how good our instincts are. Today’s instantaneous, social media-driven world encourages a tremendous amount of reactiveness. And with everything moving at us so quickly, sometimes all we can do is react, rather than respond or even gain control.
But the best, most successful people demand control of the situation. They push back and establish a tone that says, “I will not be forced into a quick, poorly considered decision.” They define the terms, conditions, and timelines on which they will make important decisions. And they hold their ground, even if others get mad (and they will get mad!).
Strategic decisions take time. They take research, conversations, collection of input, brainstorming and refining ideas, thinking and reflecting, and only then committing to a course of action.
If you want to make better decisions, you’re going to have to push back on the way the world works today. In doing so, you’re likely to set yourself up for a very unique and high level of success.
But don’t expect our noisy world to acquiesce and understand quietly!
