Revenue and Quality

The owner has two responsibilities: revenue generation and quality assurance.

I’m speaking specifically of business owners here, but this often applies to any leader, too.

The person at the top has to ensure that the ship stays afloat. That means ensuring that revenue is consistently coming in the door. Business development, relationship cultivation, sales and marketing reviews, and similar activities all contribute to revenue generation, and no business development department will ever carry the same responsibility as the owner for ensuring revenue is coming in the door.

Simultaneously, the owner must ensure the quality of the products and services is consistent with the level of quality s/he expects from the company with his/her name on it. This includes managing by walking around, visiting company locations, meeting with team members to guide their activities, and “shopping” the business. It also carries a component of managing expenses well and controlling costs and infrastructure growth (both of which indirectly increase revenue).

No one else bears the responsibility for these two critical tasks. Portions of this work can be delegated and or coordinated with other team members, but if your name is on the sign, this is your job.

If you want your company to grow, dedicate more of your own time and energy to these two tasks. The combination is unbeatable throughout history, and the world will often bend to your will when you work hard on these two tasks.
