Are we honest with ourselves?
Life gives us lots of challenges. We dispatch many of them with ease and without much notice or fanfare. Others require some visible effort. Still others necessitate inviting colleagues and friends to help.
But what about the ones no one sees? What about the challenges that only we can confront internally? What about the ones that truly hold us back, but have no significant consequence for not addressing them?
I’m talking about the places we bottleneck our own businesses. The situations in which we don’t tell the full story to our loved ones because of how much we’re struggling. The challenges of choosing “easy” and “complacent” because we’ve already achieved significant success. The times that we cut corners or sacrifice top quality because we “don’t feel like it”.
I’m not here to judge. I’m also not here to tell you to buck up and fix it. My first and only suggestion is: be honest with yourself.
When you look in the mirror, when you lay your head down at night, when you’re awake and alone with your inner voice at 2am…be honest with yourself.
Don’t tell yourself a story about how you’re “doing your best” when you’re not even trying. Don’t tell yourself, “It’s hard,” or it’s because of some external factors when you truly know it’s because of your own effort (or lack thereof). Instead, tell yourself the truth. Be honest with yourself.
Almost every time, the next action and some form of motivation to take it will appear. Then your honesty becomes fuel for true, successful forward motion.
