I think we all secretly (or not so) crave success. Whether we consider success to be wealth, fame, power, control, or any other thing. But how do we get there?
The fastest way to succeed: help others succeed.
Help others succeed. Without any expectation of personal return. Without any attempt to parlay their success into your own. Without any strings.
Consulting or coaching isn’t telling others what to do. It’s not waving a magic wand and doubling the size of their businesses. It’s asking questions to help them uncover their unique path to success, and it’s encouraging them to walk that path (and occasionally, walking it with them).
I’ve been reading a lot about hospitality and quality care for customers lately (check out three excellent books: Setting the Table, Unreasonable Hospitality, and Bluefishing). The content all talks about the same simple things: ask questions, pay attention, really listen, connect dots to get ideas to surprise and delight customers, and act on those ideas.
Rarely do I find myself happier and more excited than when I have a chance to surprise and delight someone. Perhaps that’s my definition of success, and perhaps I should act even more on it.
Help others succeed because it’s the right thing to do. Help others succeed with the mentality that all boats rise with the tide. Help others succeed because we really are all in this together.
Whatever yours is, though, remember: when you help others succeed, you’re going to find a lot more happiness and success than you ever dreamed possible.
