Get Out of Your Head

If you want to shrink your problems to their actual size, get them out of your head.

When worry starts, get it out of your head.

When anything other than a crisis happens to you, get it out of your head.

When you make a commitment or someone makes one to you, get it out of your head.

Everything is larger than life inside your head. Everything is ten times bigger and worse inside your head. These things all shrink to scale, to their actual size, to something actually manageable, when you get them out of your head.

In Getting Things Done David Allen points out that the ONE list almost everyone trusts is their calendar; an externalized list of time-based commitments.

Go for a walk with a voice recorder. Sit outside with a nice coffee and your favorite pen and notepad. Open a spreadsheet or the notes app. Do anything other than continuously ruminating on an outsized problem in your head.

If you want peace, if you want freedom, if you want decreased anxiety, and if you want increased clarity on what to act on and how, get out of your own head.
