Have you ever noticed that business growth is not a straight upward line?
I know that question sounds silly because, of course, we all know that to be the case. Yet in the moment, we seem to forget it and get quite frustrated about the pace of progress in moving important outcomes forward.
Trend lines are so deceptive because they make us think that success is a constant upward trajectory. Yes, it is, but there are peaks and valleys along the way. I frequently find myself having one or two weeks with bursts of activity wherein I meet with prospective clients, submit proposals, receive unsolicited requests to explore a working relationship with me, and have a schedule packed with client meetings.
I also frequently find myself in other periods waiting for replies to outstanding proposals, having a week of canceled meetings that leaves me with free time to spin my wheels about a seeming lack of forward progress, and finding myself worrying about things that are the direct result of needing to simply be more patient!
We could all benefit from making more peace with the fits and bursts associated with business growth. Many days will be wild and crazy, full of activity and outstanding results. Others will be slow and met with disappointing news and a lack of forward progress.
But if the overall trend line is up, we’re doing something right. Enjoy the journey and keep moving forward. The results will almost always take care of themselves.
